24 February 2007 Falkirk v Hibs Girls - Match Report

Ciara kills off brave Bairns

A superb strike from super sub Ciara Donaldson killed of Falkirks hopes of getting any points from this league fixture. Hibs first goal was created from Chloe Jamieson who won the ball and made a great through ball to Ellen who timed her run perfectly, so that she only had the goalie to beat. Ellen dribbled past the keeper and slotted the ball into the net. Second goal of the game and second goal for Ellen Pia. Ellen turned and beat three players to score an excellent solo effort.

The first half was fairly even in terms of possession and chances. For any neutral, a goal from Falkirk was deserved. The goal came from a corner which was whipped in to the near post; Amanda Tweedie collected the ball and blasted it into the back of the net. This was however a poor goal to concede from a Hibs point of view as many defenders failed to clear the ball.

Half time 2.1

The second half for Hibs fans was a tense affair with Falkirk getting more and more possession as the half progressed. Great defensive performances from Chloe Jamieson and Claire McEwan especially, helped to maintain Hibs lead. Claire’s performance was flawless, demonstrating great composure at the back.

For a large segment of the second half, Hibs had to rely on chances which came from the counter attack. On one occasion the ball broke to Ciara Donaldson who was back to goal and turned brilliantly taking the Falkirk defender by surprise, sprinting for five yards and striking the ball crisply from outside the box giving the keeper Natasha Meikle no chance. It was a fantastic goal from Ciara who nearly scored a second with a great move on the right with Ellen Pia, only for the shot to be wide.

After the third goal was scored Falkirk heads went down and Hibs finished strongly. This win keeps Hibs in contention for the league. Both teams worked hard and both teams try to play an entertaining passing game. This is not always easy on a heavy winter pitch. Both teams are drawn to meet each other in the league. Hopefully this will be on a better spring pitch and if so it has the potential to be a match which is a credit to girls football.
