Dunfermline v Hibs
Match Report - 08 Oct 2006
Hibs travelled to Dunfermline for this top of the table clash full of confidence with the expectation of winning fully justified in the end. From the start Hibs stamped their authority on a tough and resolute Dunfermline side. Hibs carved out a couple of great chances early on but were unable to punish the hosts. Siiobhan Hunter eventually broke the deadlock with one of her trade mark shots that nearly burst the net. A brace from Stacey Hutchison and another two strikes from Siobhan put Hibs firmly in the driving seat before half time.
Dunfermline pulled one back shortly after the Hibs fifth to give a reminder that they were not dead and buried. However, Dunfermline could not get a hold of the game or maintain pressure due to Caroline Weir dominating the midfield area. Caroline has an uncanny ability to ghost into positions that constantly give teams problems, whether through attacking or defending. Once in possession, she is backed up by the impressive wide players, Kirsty Smith and Stacey Hutchison.
The girls are starting to show a real understanding of how the game is played at this level. On Sunday the ability of the wide players to drop deep to take posession or the defenders assisting and over lapping the attacking midfielders was particulary evident. This mentality and approach gives the team a fluid and unpredictable formation at times which Dunfermline were unable to cope with.
Claire Emslie and Yasemin Emek are starting to form an impressive defensive partnership with both comfortable in possession and aware of the others presence and position. Many of the goals Hibs scored started from the back with the defenders starting attacking moves with their drive and passing ability. In the second half, Hibs added further goals through Kirsty and Siobhan. Kirsty helped herself to a hat trick with Siobhan eventually netting an incredible seven goals for the day.
Dunfermline are a well drilled team and have some excellent individuals with the hosts making the team feel welcome on their visit. After this game, it is inevitable Dunfermline will become a stronger side and learn from the defeat, it will be interesting when they come to St Augustines for the rematch as they are a capable side. Their captain scored both their goals and was unlucky not to get more. It would be no suprise if Dunfermline have a say in where the honours lie this season and have a sustained cup run.
The referee should also get a mention as he was fair in all his decisions and helped the girls on both sides by patiently explaining any mistakes or fouls that they made. It is this attitude that will help the game flourish and encourage players to play the game in a fair and friendly manner.
