Dunfermline - Hibs
Match Report - 3rd Sept 2006

The u17s seemed to revel in their new formation as they destroyed Dunfermline 8 - 0 on Sunday morning. The conditions were fairly difficult with constant rain making control difficult. However, from the start the girls took control and after they found their feet in the conditions and identified where the space was, Emma Gray scored the first goal from about 15 yards. This came after a couple of early chances but this time the daisy cutter screamed past a very competent Dunfermline goalkeeper. Jinky scored the second goal with an angled header from a Claire Mooney corner swung in from the right.

The midfield 5 were in total control of the game with Mariel's strong running and Danni's educated left foot in the wing back positions creating space for the midfield 3 and the front 2. Danni nearly scored a tremendous goal with an effort from about 16 yards, but a Dunfermline just managed to get her head in the way with the goalkeeper beaten. Lisa Yarwood scored the third goal with a great solo run followed by an excellent finish with her left foot after playing a one two with Claire Mooney in the box.

Their goalkeeper was keeping Dunfermline in the game and Nikki Burns had two powerful goal bound shots saved and a third from the same player skimmed the top of the bar from about 25 yards. Claire Mooney and Jinky together with Lisa were dictating the game as had been asked of them. Claire scored two excellent solo goals driving from midfield after some neat passing to beat the Dunfermline offside trap. She played herself in behind them before scoring angled drives from around 8 - 10 yards.

Lisa scored her second goal in the same manner and was putting in some crunching tackles when required which enabled Hibs to keep possession in midfield. Emma Gray with her fantastic pace and Danni with her precise passing were providing excellent deliveries into the box from the left and Claire Mooney, Jinky and Mariel were providing the same from the right. Nikki Burns was not having much luck in front of goal with numerous chances being well saved by the Dunfermline goalkeeper but eventually she was played in behind the Dunfermline defence by Jinky and scored with a strong drive from 10 yards.

Hayley replaced Emma Gray midway through the second half and immediately was sent through on goal by our central midfielders but the excellent Dunfermline goalkeeper saved from close range. However, within a few minutes, she was put through again and she made no mistake from about 6 yards.

Chelsea Watson replaced Mariel with around 20 minutes to go and did well for us in the wide right position. She provided good deliveries into the box from the right but took a fairly heavy knock and had to be replaced with a pretty tired Mariel for the last 5 - 10 minutes. Natalie McLeod replaced a very solid Laura Connolly at right centre back at half-time and gave a very solid performance throughout the second half. She continues to improve with every performance. Bex Moore replaced a very strong Megan Turnbull at left centre back 10 minutes into the second half and gave her best performance this season so far in that position. Coral Cassidy was tremendous at centre back and allowed absolutely nothing to pass her all morning. Despite playing with a strapped up wristin goal, Michelle did everything asked of her. Her kicking was intelligent and accurate and provides an air of solidity in goal.

The girls made sure that they never gave Dunfermline any chance by gaining and keeping possession throughout the game. The passing was excellent at times and the running off the ball created lots of space and chances. Defensively Hibs were solid and were put under pressure only once in the first half after a good through ball from the Dunfermline midfield. With their pacy striker through on goal, Coral came across very quickly and slid in to snuff out the danger and concede a corner.

The girls linked well today and the team was balanced through the middle and on both flanks. The central midfield 3 were outstanding with Claire Mooney playing very well. However, Jinky and Lisa were the pick of the day and jointly get the MOTM award.
