23 MAY 2010 - HIBERNIAN 1875 2 v 6 EAST FIFE - DIV 2 EAST
1875 Ladies Good Run Comes To An End
Hibernian 1875 played East Fife Ladies on League business on the astro turf at Redford Barracks in sweltering overhead conditions on Sunday 23 May.
The opening exchanges were even but East Fife took the lead in the 11th minute following some sloppy defending by the home side. Hibernian came back into the game and some fine approach play by Amy Young was rewarded when Emma Whiting tucked the ball past the East Fife keeper in the 23rd minute to level matters. Claire McEwan struck the bar with a 30 yard free kick in the 39th minute and the half seemed destined to finish level when further poor defending by the home side gifted East Fife a 2-1 advantage with the last kick of the half.
East Fife started the second half the hungrier side and Laura Connolly had to pull of three excellent saves to keep Hibernian in the match. Laura could do nothing to prevent East Fife extending their lead in the 71st minute when the away centre volleyed into the bottom corner. A nicely worked short corner between Danielle Lennie and Kelly Bertram saw the latter set up top scorer Alana McMillan to pull a goal back 2 minutes later. Hibernian failed to take the initiative unfortunately and East Fife scored 3 further goals in the final 15 minutes to run out deserved 6-2 winners.
Hibernian: Laura Connolly; Amy Fowler; Hope Thompson; Natalie McDermid; Claire McEwan; Amy Young; Louise Whyte, Kelly Bertram; Alan McMillan; Danielle Lennie; Emma Whiting - Subs - Jennifer Fawkes; Claire MacGill; Kirsty Rose
Coach Ian Connolly commented - "Our young team failed to reach the high standards of recent weeks and allowed East Fife to dominate for long spells. We simply did not match the work rate and enthusiasm of the more experienced East Fife side and paid the penalty. But for a couple of breathtaking saves from Laura Connolly, the defeat could have been heavier. We must improve our work rate significantly in our next outing against a very strong Dunfermline side at Pitreavie on 6 June.
