Extra time win for Hibs Girls 96
Scottish Cup 1st round Hibs Girls 96 versus Deeside Girls played at Banchory.
SCOTTISH CUP 1ST ROUND
DEESIDE GIRLS VERSUS HIBS GIRLS 96
ON SATURDAY 1ST MAY, 2010
Hibs girls arrived at the end of their long journey north in good time. It was dull and cold but the rain held off at kick-off time at the excellent stadium. Hibs started brightly and forced a corner on the right which was cleared. In 7 minutes Louise Kerr shot past the post. Then Clare Williamson fired in a free kick which was saved by the home keeper. A corner on the left resulted in Lia Tweedie's header again being saved. Deeside fought back and their No.17 shot just past in 15 minutes, as did their No.16 shortly afterwards. Worse was to follow when the home No.17 put her side ahead with a deceptive high shot. A feature of the first half was the excellent display of the Hibs keeper, Lauren Robertson whose safe handling and decisive running off her line kept the Hibs defence steady, Courtney Reid, Rachael Conner, Shannon Riley, Abby Neish and Lucy Hale all performed very well against the dangerous Deeside attack. Hibs Girls were slightly unfortunate to be behind in an evenly fought first half.
HALF-TIME DEESIDE GIRLS 1 HIBS GIRLS 0
Deeside opened the second half strongly and their No.16 shot just past the post. They came even closer in 50 minutes when their No.18 hammered a great shot against the Hibs bar. When the ball rebounded, the Hibs defence somehow managed to scramble the ball clear. At the other end, Georgia Morran just failed to connect with a cross from the left. Hibs fought on and all their efforts were rewarded in 54 minutes with a great equalising goal. Rebecca McArthur played a short corner on the right to Sarah Laverty and good close inter-passing with Lia Tweedie ended with Sarah being fouled by a home defender. However the loose ball fell to Lia Tweedie and she hammered a high shot home from 12 yards for the equaliser, to the great delight of the visiting Hibs fans. Hibs had a scare in the 60th minute when Deeside again hit the bar, this time by their No.16. Both teams were tiring towards the end but Louise Kerr made a brave run in 64 minutes which ended in her good shot being saved.
FULL-TIME DEESIDE GIRLS 1 HIBS GIRLS 1
Tension mounted when extra time commenced and in the 3rd minute, Hibs took the lead for the first time. They were again indebted to Clare Williamson whose powerful run from half-way ended with a strong scoring shot from just inside the penalty box. A few minutes later, Clare hit the home bar and before the home team could recover, Hibs scored their decisive 3rd goal. A long, accurate cross by Lia Tweedie was collected by Georgia Morran who cleverly wriggled her way past 2 defenders and forced the ball home. This was a wonderful victory for the Hibs Girls and apologies are due to any of them who have not been mentioned by name as this was a team of 12 heroines who all fought for each other throughout the 90 minutes play. We all continue to be most proud of them and cannot wait for their 2nd round match.
